History
History fires pupils' curiosity about the past in Britain and the wider world.
At Burraton, our children consider how the past influences the present, what past societies were like, how these societies organised their politics, and what beliefs and cultures influenced people’s actions.
As they do this, we endeavour to support our children in developing a chronological framework for their knowledge of significant events and people. We help them to see the diversity of human experience, and understand more about themselves as individuals and members of society. What our children learn and internalise through History can influence their attitudes and values, as well as influencing their decisions and personal choices as they move through life.
History forms an important part of the whole curriculum at Burraton C.P. School and is taught largely in chronological order. Significant historical events are taught, such as the Great Fire of London, as well as significant cultural ages from History, including the Ancient Egyptians and the Ancient Greeks. While we recognise the importance and relevance of History in its own right, we are also aware that it cannot be taught in isolation. It is not confined to the study of past events and ways of life but rather involves the study of human and social behaviour and how people's beliefs and cultures have influenced life today. Our History aims are, therefore, of fundamental importance in our whole school curriculum planning.
A variety of primary and secondary sources are used to support the teaching and learning of History, including artefacts and visits to local museums and exhibitions.
